Old Map of Edinburgh 1650 Edinbourg

Prior to this map, the only available representation was the highly stylized illustration found in Braun and Hogenberg's Civitates Orbis Terrarum (late 16th century), which bore little relation to Edinburgh’s actual layout beyond its castle. This engraving presents an accurate and detailed plan of the city, complete with key street and place names, a dedication cartouche, and the royal arms of Scotland.

The map was the work of James Gordon of Rothiemay, son of Robert Gordon of Straloch, both instrumental in compiling maps of Scotland used by Johannes Blaeu for the Scottish and Irish volume of his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1654). In 1647, James Gordon was commissioned by Edinburgh’s town council to create a comprehensive plan of the city. For his efforts, he was rewarded with 500 merks and was granted the status of burgess and guild brother.
